Monday, June 10th, 1985: So far in his young career, Charles Brown has kept a low profile, but after his performance at the plate last week, he attracted the notice of the rest of the South Atlantic League in a big way as he was named the Player of the Week today for his efforts.
The 19-year-old Augusta Green Jackets catcher hit at a torrid .467 clip as he collected 7 hits in 15 at-bats, 2 home runs, 8 RBIs and 4 runs scored.
For the year Brown is hitting .250 with 3 home runs. His stats include 21 RBI and 16 runs scored. |

Monday, June 10th, 1985: 20-year-old Jorge Montoya sent shock waves through MLBIV Single A last week with an eye-popping performance that brought him the Midwest League Player of the Week Award.
A newcomer to the league, Montoya made the establishment sit up and take notice, punishing opposing pitchers with a .524 average, 11 hits in 21 at-bats, no home runs and 6 runs batted in.
Where the Lansing Lugnuts shortstop goes from here, only the baseball gods know for sure, but Montoya certainly made his mark last week.
During the current season Montoya is batting at a .250 clip with no home runs and 9 RBIs. He has played in 17 games and scored 6 times. |
 | Xie Hot, Drive Cold
Sunday, June 9th, 1985: An-yan Xie effectively shut down the Drive today, blanking them 3-0 on 3 hits, ringing up 5 strikeouts and allowing 3 walks. The RiverDogs pitcher appeared to get stronger as the game went on.
"I don't know if I was getting any stronger," Xie said after the game, "I feel like my mechanics were getting better. I was able to make some adjustments and get a little more comfortable out there."
The Drive skipper said, "We had some opportunities, but weren't able to execute. We just didn't swing the bats very well today."
This season Xie has compiled a 7-5 mark with a 2.93 ERA. |
